Khamma Ghani @ Sagar Ratna , Oud Mehta , Dubai
I arrived at the Sagar Ratna restaurant which is like a reflection of the view one would have of the Blue city from the Mehrangarh Fort in Rajasthan. Bustling with people who walked in at regular intervals , making their way through the busy tables with scrumptious food , are the the servers clad in traditional vardi's "uniforms" which one would also see at the royal palaces.
I met up with the perfect host Piyush and Ashish who gave us a brief introduction of the restaurant , rajasthani cuisine and the idea behind GHEE+VE.
Sagar Ratna is the brain child of 2 advertising professionals Piyush and Ashish, who also happen to be very good friends and now Business Partners. Together they wanted to take their love for food , passion for Indian cuisine along with a goal of introducing Marwari cuisine in Dubai which is home to a large expat community.
Established in 2016 as a pure vegetarian restaurant in JLT cluster R, near DAMAC Metro station and the other located in Oud Mehta Building Opposite Sunrise Super Market which is now open for foodies like myself to enjoy delicious North Indian , Rajasthani, Jain Cuisine and South Indian cuisines as well.
So let my taste buds take you through a wide variety of delectable and exquisite Rajasthani dishes starting from main courses to snacks to a sweet dish that looks like a honey comb.
Drinks:
Makani Lassi: One has had a punjabi lassi but the makani lassi is a rajasthani version of a lassi. Prepared with yoghurt made right from scratch in the kitchens of Sagar Ratna, the makani lassi is creamy not too sweet and garnished with pistachios and a dollop of cream. Recommended 👌
Snacks:
Jodhpuri Pyaaz Kachori and Jodhpuri Mirchi Bada : The Jodhpuri Pyaaz kachori and Jodhpuri Mirchi Bada is a popular snack not only in Jodhpur but one can find it throughout Rajasthan. The Jodhpuri Pyaaz Kachori is a round shaped crispy flaky pastry like texture , deep fried kachori that is stuffed with a a filling of onions and potatoes. Recommended 👌.
The Jodhpuri Mirchi Bada is a variety of a capsicum chilly stuffed with a potato filling which is then dipped in a gramflour batter and deep fried . it is then served with a sweet and spicy chutney. Recommended 👌.
Mehrangarh Kebab Platter: The Mehrangangarh Kebab Platter is a vegetarian platter served sizzling hot with a salad . The platter has a variety of malai paneer tikka , paneer tikka , hara bhara kebab , steaming hot cauliflowers grilled with a marinade, seekh kebab and stuffed potatoes. Every item served on the platter was very tasty , flavorful and had its distinct taste. The Paneer is made in the very kitchens of Sagar ratna, its very soft , moist and more like a cushion that bounces back.
Recommended 👌.
Note: You will love it even if you are a hard core Non vegetarian.
Mains:
Jodhpuri Gatta Curry : A very popular traditional Rajasthani dish made from gram flour "besan" dumplings which is steamed or boiled before adding to the curry. The Gatta served in Sagar Ratna is really tasty not lumpy or salty and it goes well with a roti or a phulka. Recommended 👌
Dhungar Paneer Tikka Masala: - The Dungar Paneer is the chefs signature dish, its grilled paneer that added to a nice creamy dry masala. The highlight of the dish is the paneer which is made right from scratch at sagar ratna itself. The paneer masala is creamy, lite on the palate and doesnt over power the Paneer. You can have it with a roti or a phulka and make sure you do ask for Ghee.Recommended 👌
Dal Makhani: - Like the traditional gatta curry the dal makhani is made of black lentil which is then smoked and served with cream. Its creamy , smokey and rich in flavor. You can even have it without a roti :) Recommended 👌
Breads / Rotis : I had a mix basket of Indian Breads that included a Missi Roti (Whole wheat and gram flour mixed to make a roti) ,Tandoori Roti , Phulkas with ghee and a Mixed herbs roti which can be eaten without any gravy , you can simply have it with a tea or as a snack.
Rabri Ghewar: A traditional Indian sweet typical to the households in Rajasthan. The Ghewar is made into a round disc doughnut like shape of all purpose flour that is fried and then soaked in sugar syrup. Once the sugar is soaked well into the disc like structure the Ghewar is topped with Rabri which taste more like a barfi :) Its then garnished with Vark a silver foil like paper and pistachios. Sagar Ratna serves small bowl like sizes of Ghewar so you can enjoy the sweet.
Try cutting a Ghewar for your next Birthday , make it a desi Birthday. I like to call it the Indian Honey Comb Dessert. Recommended 👌
Cards & Cash : Both are accepted
Take Away: Sagar Ratna serves in an around the radius of 10 kms radius for both their restaurants. I would like to add , the food made at sagar ratna is made from scratch and made fresh, traditional food is not similar to fast food hence the timing does vary. Do be patient while your food arrives as everything good in life does take time.
Wifi Available: You are at the dining table , Enjoy your food and keep your phone down.
Parking: Ample RTA Parking available.
Customer Service: Over the past few months of my food blogging and getting invited to enjoy and review food , the host at sagar ratna have been the first to sit with me and explain the dish , how its traditionally prepared, the ingredients , and probably even give me a memory they had attached to that dish. In India we have a saying with goes as "athiti devo bhava" literally mean " The Guest is equivalent to that of God"and that says volumes of the host and the restaurant. The food arrives on time and you are not kept waiting. Even the people serving the food are very pleasant and you may learn a phrase or two in rajasthani.

Reason to visit Sagar Ratna : In India we dont believe using a fork and spoon but use our fingers that make the morsels and if you love the food you lick your fingers which is an action that displays you love the food that was served to you. I can assure you you will be licking your fingers after tasting the meals at Sagar Ratna. A special mention even to the chef of Sagar ratna who is has been brought all the way from Jodhpur to make sure you have authentic and tasty Rajasthani food here in Dubai. The food shines all the way right from the drink to the sweets.
I would recommend you having all the dishes I had and also would want you to try the Marwari thali , Gulab Jambun Ki Sabzi ,the Ker Sangri and Chana Jaisalmer ke.
For you to Note:
Sagar Ratna is known for their sweets as it is made of fresh milk and Mawa. Fresh Paneer is also sold at 45 dhs a kg and trust me its soft and spongy.
Rajasthani Cuisine is known for being rich in flavor and rich with cow ghee. Sagar ratna is on a mission to promote the idea of Ghee Positive "Ghee+VE" as it strengthens your bones and promotes weight loss , yes you heard that right. When used in moderation is excellent for health. I am talking of pure ghee and not vanaspati ghee (vegetable fat).
I would like to end by saying Choko Khano to the team of Sagar Ratna.
